Honoring Black History Month Through Design
In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting a few groundbreaking Black designers that have worked with MillerKnoll. From Nick Cave’s dimension and vibrant color in textiles, to industrial designer, Stephen Burks’ unique craftsmanship and collaboration with Berea College sold exclusively at DWR.
Nick Cave
Taking inspiration from specific sculptures and installations, groundbreaking artist Nick Cave layers pattern and craft techniques for a collection of upholstery, wallcovering, and drapery that establishes a new point of view on the textile experience. Cave creates dimension in textiles by layering, rearranging, and transforming everyday objects such as beads, doilies, sequins, and synthetic hair into material and sociopolitical representations.
Stephen Burks
Industrial designer, Stephen Burks was invited by Berea College to design new products for students to make. Burks used this opportunity to create a collaborative process involving students in the design. His partnership was transformative for Berea in broadening it’s scope and vision for student creativity and their relationship to craft. The result of the partnership is the Crafting Diversity Collection, sold exclusively at DWR, which offers crafts interpreted in a modern way.
